The test itself
What is the Galleri test?›
Galleri is a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) blood test developed by GRAIL. A single blood draw is analysed for a DNA signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer — many of which have no routine screening pathway in the UK. The test is designed to be taken annually alongside the standard screens your doctor already recommends, not instead of them.
How does it actually find cancer?›
Cells naturally shed fragments of DNA into the bloodstream. Cancer cells shed DNA too, and those fragments carry distinctive chemical markings called methylation patterns. Galleri uses a machine-learning algorithm to read those patterns, flag whether the DNA signal looks cancerous, and — if it does — predict the tissue or organ where the signal is most likely to have originated.
Which cancers can it screen for?›
In clinical studies, Galleri detected a signal shared by more than 50 cancer types. The panel includes many of the aggressive cancers that account for roughly two-thirds of cancer deaths, and crucially a number with no current routine screening pathway — such as pancreatic, ovarian, liver, and oesophageal. The full list is published on GRAIL’s website.
Does it predict my future cancer risk or tell me if I’m genetically predisposed?›
No. Galleri is a point-in-time test that looks for DNA being actively shed by cancer cells right now. It is not a hereditary risk assessment and does not replace genetic tests such as BRCA or Lynch syndrome screening. If you’re concerned about family history, a genetic counsellor is the right person to speak with.
Accuracy & performance
How accurate is it?›
Based on GRAIL’s published data, approximately 99% of people who take the test receive a “No Cancer Signal Detected” result. Of the roughly 1% who receive a “Cancer Signal Detected” result, around 62% are confirmed to have cancer on follow-up investigation (the positive predictive value). The false-positive rate is about 0.4%. When a cancer signal is found, the predicted tissue of origin is accurate around 93% of the time — which helps guide your clinician’s next diagnostic steps.
Does it catch every cancer?›
No single test does, and Galleri is no exception. Some cancers shed very little DNA into the blood, particularly early-stage breast and prostate cancers, brain cancers, and most skin cancers. Both false-positive and false-negative results are possible. That’s why Galleri is intended to sit alongside — not replace — the single-cancer screens your GP or specialist recommends.
Is the test regulated?›
GRAIL’s clinical laboratory is CLIA-certified and accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Galleri itself has not been cleared or approved by the US FDA and is offered as a laboratory-developed test. It is available in the UK through private healthcare providers only, not via the NHS. BioHealthcare Hub™ holds the relevant UK accreditations for sample collection and clinical oversight.
Who it’s for
Who is the test recommended for?›
Galleri is recommended for adults at elevated risk of cancer — typically people aged 50 and over. Cancer risk rises sharply with age: over-50s are roughly thirteen times more likely to develop cancer than those under 50, and more than one in three people will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime.
Who should not take the test?›
Galleri is not recommended for people who are pregnant, under 22 years old, or currently undergoing active cancer treatment. If any of these apply to you, please speak with a clinician before ordering.
The appointment
Do I need to fast before the blood draw?›
No. No fasting or other preparation is required.
How much blood is taken?›
Approximately 20 mL — about one and a half tablespoons — split between two collection tubes. The draw is taken from a vein in your arm by a trained phlebotomist and typically takes a few minutes.
How long until I get my results?›
Results are typically available about two weeks after your sample reaches the processing laboratory. In some cases results can take up to four weeks. The time your result takes is not an indicator of what that result will say.
Understanding your result
What does “No Cancer Signal Detected” mean?›
It means the test did not find DNA methylation patterns in your sample that are typically associated with cancer. This is the expected result for around 99% of people. Important: it does not completely rule out cancer. Some cancers shed little DNA into the blood and will not be detected this way. You should continue with every routine screening your GP or specialist recommends.
What does “Cancer Signal Detected” mean?›
It means Galleri has identified DNA in your sample with patterns commonly associated with cancer, and has predicted the tissue or organ where the signal most likely originated. This is a screening signal, not a diagnosis. Follow-up diagnostic investigation — which may include imaging, further blood work, or a biopsy — is needed to confirm whether cancer is actually present. Our clinical team will contact you directly to coordinate next steps.
Does Galleri replace my mammogram, smear test, colonoscopy, or prostate check?›
No. Galleri is designed to work alongside the established single-cancer screens, not to replace them. Mammography, cervical screening, bowel screening, and lung CT (for eligible smokers) all detect cancers that Galleri may miss, particularly at early stages. The two approaches are complementary.
How often should I repeat the test?›
Galleri is designed as an annual screening test. Aggressive cancers can develop and progress within a year, so yearly testing — added to your usual health check — improves the chance of catching a signal early enough to matter. Your clinician will advise on the best timing for you.
Ordering & practical
When will I be charged?›
Your card is authorised at checkout but only charged once your appointment is confirmed by our clinical team, typically within 24 hours. If we cannot confirm an appointment within seven days for any reason, the authorisation is released automatically.
Can I cancel or reschedule?›
Yes. You can cancel for a full refund at any time before your sample is collected. Rescheduling is free up to 24 hours before your appointment. Once a sample has been processed by the laboratory, the test cost becomes non-refundable. Full terms are in our Refund & Cancellation Policy.
Who reviews my results?›
Every report is reviewed by a GMC-registered clinician before it is released to you through the secure Hub portal. If a cancer signal is detected, a clinician will contact you directly by phone to explain the result, answer questions, and help you arrange onward diagnostic investigation.
Can you share my result with another doctor?›
Yes. Your ordering clinician automatically receives a copy of your report. You can ask us to fax or securely email the result to any additional healthcare provider — such as your NHS GP or a private specialist — at any time.
Is my data kept private?›
Yes. Your data is handled in full compliance with UK GDPR, stored on encrypted UK-based servers, and never sold or shared with third parties for marketing. Blood samples are processed through GRAIL’s accredited laboratory strictly for the purpose of producing your test result. See our Privacy Policy for the complete detail.
